A town in its own right, Estepona lies some twenty kilometres west of Marbella, occupying its own section of the Costa del Sol. Where Marbella is glamorous and stylish Estepona offers a more down to earth appeal and remains more typically Spanish, with a lively white-washed town centre full of traditional shops, cafés and tapas bars – exactly the kind of charm that first drew foreigners to these shores.

The long fine beach that runs along the length of the town is actually one of the best in the region, and well facilitated with beach bars, restaurants and a modern promenade complete with children’s playgrounds. The marina, on the western side of town, is equally rustic and charming, though particularly lively on summer nights. Around here are a mix of modern and more traditional apartments and townhouses, as well as a series of resort hotels whose first class facilities include beach clubs and spas.

Not to be outdone by Marbella, Estepona has a good choice of golf courses close by, but does it with a style and ambience all of its own. As it is smaller than Marbella, the countryside begins on the far side of the motorway, where rustic properties dot undulating valleys. Popular with hikers and horse riders alike, it is the beginning of a beautiful natural area that rises from pine-clad hills to the heights of the Serranía de Ronda Mountain Range.
