While the ‘real’ Andalucía is said to begin in the mountain ranges on the edge of the Costa del Sol, there are some authentic white mountain villages within just a few minutes of the beaches and seaside promenades of Marbella. The most famous, and to many the prettiest, of these is Benahavis, a small village set within a beautiful green valley not more than ten minutes from San Pedro de Alcántara.
Though just seven kilometres from the sea and within easy range of both Marbella and Estepona, once you are in the valley or walking through the streets of the village you could easily imagine yourself to be deep in Andalucía. All around are mountain views and a verdant valley sprinkled with rustic style townhouses, villas and apartments interspersed with parks and village greens.
That Benahavis is a little different becomes evident when you spot the driving range on the far side of the valley, for this is a prosperous and large municipality that also includes luxurious residential areas such as La Zagaleta and Los Arqueros in surrounding valleys. There you live in luxurious villas or stylish apartments overlooking lush green golf courses, but for those who choose Benahavis it is all about the charm of living in a pretty Spanish village famous for its country restaurants.
